Bear Glacier's giant icebergs offers a memorable sea kayaking experience. Bear Glacier's unique low profile face calves along crevasses into mountainous size icebergs. This feature differs from other Kenai Fjords glaciers that have high faces when calving the ice shatters into small ice pieces.
Guided: Stay at our modern comfortable camp and enjoy guided activates including sea kayaking and naturalist-led hikes, go beach combing or just relax and enjoy the scenery from our camp. All meals are included. Our deluxe camp features large custom made Weatherport tents with wood floors; beds and they are heated for your comfort.
Self-guided: Do-It-Yourself Trip. Backcountry Safaris offers water taxi and kayak shuttles to and from Bear Glacier. Sea kayak and dry suit rentals are available at our camp or bring your own sea kayak. There are many scenic camping spots at Bear Glacier Lake.
Bear Glacier is the largest glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park and dumps into a large lake separated from the Pacific Ocean by a small glacier moraine. Located 30 roadless miles south of Seward and accessible by boat, Backcountry Safaris' Bear Glacier Adventure Camp is a sea kayaking paradise that offers glaciers, sea kayaking amongst giant icebergs and spectacular glacier-carved mountainous surroundings.

Wildlife in the area includes black bears, mountain goats, coyotes, wolverines and harbor seals that come into the lagoon for protection from the Orca whales that cruise just outside the beach. For birders, this area is the nesting area for a large variety of birds.
Our new 2009 Bear Glacier Camp offers a modern camp and features large custom made 12 x 12 WeatherPort tents that have wood floors, 2 beds and are heated for your comfort. WeatherPort tents are use around the world in permanent wilderness camps and have been proven to offer comfortable lodging in the most severe weather conditions. Our large dining tent offers a place to relax and look out and enjoy spectacular scenery, giant icebergs and Bear Glacier and is this where our delicious family style meals are served.
We can't let you leave our Bear Glacier Adventure Camp without adding a special bonus. The charter boat trip on the return from our camp includes a wildlife and birding tour along Cape Resurrection. Orca, humpback whales, harbor and Dall porpoise are often seen, while Fin, Gray and other whales make an occasional appearance. Seeing the endangered Stellar Sea Lion is almost guaranteed. Birders get ready for a special treat: Cape Resurrection offers a spectacular array of marine birds, shore birds, and rookeries. Tufted puffin, horned puffin, cormorant, black oystercatcher, pigeon guillemot, black-legged kittiwake, common murre and bald eagles are just a few species we may encounter.
You may prefer a complete package including lodging in Anchorage, transportation to Seward, lodging in Seward, and with pre or post tour activities in Seward. On the return, depending on the high tide, it may be possible to return to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad or motor coach on the same day. Late afternoon high tides may require an additional night in Seward. You may prefer to rent a car to give you the most flexibility. Our Bear Glacier Adventure Camp is run to minimize the impact to our pristine environment. At Bear Glacier we are dedicated to environmentally friendly practices and green policies. All trash and human waste is carried out. We use biodegradable products and recycle everywhere we can.
2009 Tour Dates And Rates
Departures Seward Boat Harbor daily June 5 - September 15. This exclusive place can only be accessed on high tides, so your arrival and departure is timed with the tides. This time varies a little each day and upon reservation, you'll receive detailed information on arrival and departure times. We recommend that you arrive in Seward the day before your departure day.
For the best experience a two or more night stay is recommended. For those with a tight travel itinerary a one-night stay gives you an opportunity to see some incredible scenery and sea kayaking among the giant icebergs. Everyone gets the wildlife birding boat tour on the return. Most guests staying one night will depart wishing they had stayed longer.

We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance. Travel insurance coverage can help with expenses for the unforeseeable such as lost baggage, trip delays, emergency evacuation, and cancellation due to illness. Also “cancel for any reason options” are available. Travel Insurance is available through Backcountry Safaris / TravelSafe Vacation.

Backcountry Safaris assumes no responsibility for any injury, loss, damage, delay, or death to person or property arising from the negligent or willful act or failure to act of any person who is to or does provide goods or services for this trip or for the action or inaction of any other third party. Without limitation, Backcountry Safaris is not responsible for acts of God, equipment failures, vehicle or vessel accidents, illness from food or otherwise, annoyance, delays, failure of any means of conveyance to arrive or depart as scheduled, and changes in transit or hotel and lodge services over which it has no control.
